Celebrities and celebrity culture have permeated our culture. From tabloids to entertainment news television to gossip websites, we are bombarded with images of the famous from all angles. Celebrities reside on our clothing and cereal boxes, telling us what to wear and what to buy. Individuals dedicate their lives to individual celebrities, tracking their every move while professing their undying love and devotion. We, as a culture, are obsessed with the world of the celebrity.
Why, then, does this obsession exist? How did it evolve? Why has it had such a continued impression on our culture? How do developments in technology impact this cultural obsession with celebrity and how do celebrities use new media to ensure the continuation of their elite status? These are some of the questions I explored throughout this project, which, when complied together, give an overview of the relationship between the celebrity and the fan and how the advent of social media has impacted this relationship.
